Train Noise Downtown Rapid City

Living downtown has become very popular, a trend observed all across the nation. Rapid City leaders are looking at how to provide more housing for downtown. But even if housing was adequate, noise from trains has been identified as a deterrent.

Despite trains, train noise, and delays from trains traveling through the city for at least a century, the city is looking at ways to serve those prospective residents, and minimize the train  noise….

That’s Mayor Steve Allender, who said one of the options is cost-prohibitive…

The second option would be to mount horns at the intersections that are directional that would point directly to the drivers and pedestrians getting ready to cross. He said it wouldn’t require coordination with adjacent streets and stoplight signals.

He said that currently is under investigation, and expects a plan to come together in the near future.
