SNOW MELT FLOODING

We had a nice dumping of snow, followed by a warm-up over the weekend, which is expected to continue. Melissa Smith, Hydrologist at the National Weather Service office in Rapid City said there was almost an inch of liquid in that recent snowfall…

She said there could be some flooding in the northwest corner of South Dakota, in the Little Missouri Basin, and along the White River…

Many of the other creeks and streams across the area have been pretty dry, so there’s no expected flooding along the Belle Fourche River or even along Rapid Creek right now.

Smith said it’s a wait-and-see right now – if that snowmelt contributes to an increase in the soil moisture and if the run-off from that moisture will fill up some of the stock ponds and dugouts that remain dry.
