Counting is underway as petitions were submitted on Tuesday afternoon by Citizens For Liberty to the Finance Office to put the city council’s decision to build a new arena to a vote. The group estimated they collected 2,861, more than the 2, 095 required. Citizens For Liberty spokesperson Tonchi (tawn-chee)Weaver said the public should have a vote on the arena because it’s the people who will be left holding the bag.  Mayor Allender said he understands concerns over such a large expenditure but also said that this is an investment. After extensive study of options, cost, design, investment and return, Allender said he concluded that building new would be the best decision…..

Allender said that following the final approval or disapproval of this measure, likely at a public election this summer, one of the plans will be executed. But he said an upgrade is not a good choice….

This discussion is about the Barnet Arena only…

The entire complex has been brought up to the ADA standards, with the exception of the Barnet Arena.

Many are concerned about an increase in taxes. Weaver told KOTA Radio this morning that Citizens For Liberty, which resists irresponsible tax and spend policies,   has done their part and given a voice to the citizens.

Allender will be holding a press conference this Wednesday afternoon at 2pm.
