The Annual buffalo Roundup Officially kicks off today at 9:30AM. An exciting event where you can watch Cowboys and Cowgirls drive a herd of 1300 buffalo.

The Roundup officially began in 1965 but the practice dates back all the way to 1914, before Custer State Park even became an official Park. Prior to 1965 Custer state park actually supplied bison to United States Troops in WWII as the park had a meat packaging plant on site. As more demand for buffalo products i.e. meat and hides rose in the 50’s the park decided that it was time to capitalize on the market and in 1965 the first annual Buffalo Roundup began.

Not only is the roundup an incredible sight to see, it is also critical as a management tool in maintaining a strong and healthy herd. Today it is an event that brings many people together and is an exciting event for adults and children alike.
