City officials remind the public the parking lot of City Hall will be closed to parking and vehicle traffic beginning today at 5 p.m. until Saturday at 7 p.m. for the staging of some of the events of the 16th annual Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival. Sixth Street, between Main Street and Omaha Street will also be closed to vehicle traffic for most of the day Saturday for staging of various event vendors.
The annual Pumpkin Festival offers a day of numerous activities at Main Street Square, along Sixth Street, in Memorial Park near the Promenade area and the City Hall parking lot. Events will be held between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Festival includes pumpkin chunkin’ and carving contests, over 70 vendors, entertainment, Kidz Zone, food trucks, the Pumpkin Pub Crawl, mascots, drumline performances, a downtown business scarecrow contest, pumpkin painting stations, a large pumpkin display and weighing contest, and a Touch-A-Truck event.
The ‘Touch-A-Truck’ event is hosted by the City’s Public Works Department with several City vehicles staged in a static display in the City Hall parking lot beginning at 10 a.m. Vehicles expected to make an appearance include a police car, fire truck, snow plows, garbage collection truck, street sweeper, ambulance, excavator, camera van and much more.
The event will also include the unveiling of special artwork on the blades of City snow plows this winter season. The artwork was submitted by the talented artists of the Suzie Cappa Art Center and selected in a vote by Rapid City citizens.
