PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakotans have an opportunity to help preserve a snapshot of life in the state for future generations.
The South Dakota State Historical Society and the South Dakota America 250 Commission are collecting items for a time capsule that will be buried November 2 at the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial in Sioux Falls and opened in 2076.
Organizers are looking for small, durable objects that represent life in South Dakota today. Suggested items include lapel pins, expired driver’s licenses, laminated paper keepsakes and fishing lures.
The deadline to submit items is October 16. A committee will select which items are placed in the capsule, and those whose items are chosen will be invited to attend the burial ceremony.
Officials say the time capsule is intended to serve as a lasting record of life in South Dakota during the state’s America 250 celebration year.
