Make plans to join the crowd on Saturday, June 2, 2018 for National Trails Day. Two ranger-guided hikes are planned for this nationwide special event. The first starts at 10 a.m. and follows the easy, one-quarter-mile Roof Trail. The second treks the moderate, three-mile Canyons Trail from 1-4:30 p.m. Both hikes begin at the visitor center.
Participants will learn about the surrounding ponderosa pine forest. A few activities for kids will also be shared along the Roof Trail to complement the ever-popular Junior Ranger Program. Although the hikes are geared for families, all visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend.
For planning purposes, hikers should wear boots or sturdy shoes. Due to a lack of tree cover on the Canyons Trail, wearing sunscreen or a ball cap is recommended. On both hikes, participants should bring their own water and trail snacks; vending machines are available on-site, as well as a Park Store within the visitor center for added supplies.
Reservations are not needed. Interested hikers should simply arrive at the visitor center about 15-20 minutes before the scheduled times. For more information, contact the visitor center directly at (605) 673-8300 or jeca_interpretation@nps.gov.
