Organizers of the adventure race Primal Quest have chosen the Badlands as the location of their next race in August of 2009.
Primal Quest is a grueling race which incorporates many different disciplines including orienteering, over a 10-day period. Four-person teams navigate through a course known only to race organizers until the day of the race.
Adventure racer Doug Judson is captain of team Tecnu Extreme/Staphaseptic, one of North America’s top adventure racing teams, which participated in last year’s race in Montana.
Judson said he has a bone to pick with Primal Quest Badlands because he was pulled from the course last year, after getting pneumonia and having near kidney failure….

Still, his team continued as an unranked 3-person team and finished the race in just under nine days.
Judson said as Primal Quest Badlands gets closer, his team plans to come to the area for some team training sessions. They won’t know what course is set for the actual race until the day of the race, so Judson said they’ll try to guesstimate…

And as always, whether racing or training for a race, the team practice’s the race’s code of leaving minimal impact on the terrain.
