Created: 7/25/2009 5:15:41 AM

Despite a national recession, Custer State Park is enjoying strong visitor number.

More visitors entered the park in June than any June in the park's history, up 6% from last year. May visitor numbers were 9% higher than last year. And last year was busiest season in the park's logbook.

Visitor Services Coordinator Craig Pugsley says there aren't more locals taking staycations in the hills.

"They're coming from the exact same markets they've come from for the last 10 years," he said.

The states that send the most tourists to Custer are Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska.
