Primal Quest Race Continues

Created: 8/21/2009 6:36:26 AM

The first 4-person team to cross the finish line in the Primal Quest/Badlands race did it a little after 3pm on Thursday, and in a little over 6 days, 7 hours.

Team OrionHealth, from New Zealand were greeted with pizza and ice cream in Memorial Park at 3:22pm. The next two teams to arrive, all US teams,  were several hours behind the New Zealanders.  The fourth team to complete the race did it at 1:30am Friday.

After crossing the finnish line teams must await the arrival of the additional teams before they know their actual position of finish. Race officials must award time credits and assess penalties before teams receive a final placing position.

Team South Dakota is in 14th place and was 400 miles into the race in the Badlands a little north of Red Shirt Friday morning. They left the trek down the Cheyenne River late Thursday. The South Dakota team members include Gary Haven, Lisa Gustin, Andrew Busse and Eric Hansen, all of Rapid City.

Primal Quest ends at noon Sunday in Memorial Park in Rapid City. Any teams unlikely to finish the full course will be shuttled in or will be able to take a modified course.

Teams will share in $150,000 in prize money.
