Snow Recap

Created: 12/31/2009 8:00:36 AM

 State Climatologist Dennis Todey
(TAH'-dee) says the Christmas week snowstorm in South Dakota was
unique because it covered most of the state with a lot of snow.
It produced an average of 15 inches of snow statewide, and up to
50 inches in the northern Black Hills.

He says that kind of heavy snow is generally confined to smaller
areas. He also says storms with that much snow usually come much
later in winter.

Todey says it's an El Nino winter that should bring warmer
temperatures, but he says the snow cover will limit the warmup for
a while.
