Roads closed because of flooding are
causing headaches for motorists in southeastern South Dakota.
Turner County Emergency Manager Tom Gillespie says for example
that the 10-mile trip from Centerville to Davis requires a 23-mile
detour. He says officials are worried about potential delays for
fire or ambulance crews in an emergency.
Flooding also has forced a few people from their homes in the
region and has prompted sandbagging in many areas. Centerville
homeowner Bruce Bennett says he's never seen anything like this
year's flooding.
Officials in Sioux Falls say the flood threat there has passed.
Near Mitchell, the James River is expected to crest by Friday at
25.3 feet, which would tie the record set in 2001. Officials say
damage has been minimal.
