The fat budget times are over in Pierre.
Tuesday, Governor Kristi Noem unveiled her proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget.
The Governor says times are tight.
Though Noem and legislators are looking to cut about $72 million from the budget, Noem did offer an initiative to fund students who attend private or alternative schools.
Noem said, contrary to critics, the funding would not harm public education in the state.
The Governor also proposed a 1.25% increase for state employee salaries, educators, and caregivers.
The South Dakota Legislature goes into session on January 14th, 2025 to consider the budget and other matters.
