As per South Dakota law, The Rapid City council and Rapid City Area Schools will meet today to certify the results of last Tuesday’s elections.
In the City Council races, Stephen Tamang defeated Larry Adams by more than a 2 to 1 margin to gain the Ward 1 seat previously held by Jesse Ham, who did not seek reelection.
In Ward 4, incumbent Lance Lehmann held his seat defeating Eltina Three Stars 324-184.
And in Ward 5, Callie Meyer topped incumbent Pat Roseland by just over 100 votes.
The City Council will canvass those votes at noon today in the city council chambers.
The results of the school board elections had Angela Bradsky Rafferty defeating incumbent Michael Birkeland 771-686 in the Area 3 race.
In Area 6, incumbent Jamie Clapham edged Brian Johnson by just 3 votes.
The School Board results will be canvassed today at 5:30 at the district’s central office.
Due to the slim margin, and confusion over one of the polling locations, a recount may be ordered. Both Johnson and Clapham say they directed voters to cast ballots at Summerset City Hall, but the location was moved to the Blackhawk fire station. The district stated that the move was posted in Meade County’s newspaper of record and information and links concerning voting instructions were posted on social media on election day.
We will continue to follow this story after certification is complete.
