Fire crews in the Northern Hills had a busy night battling multiple blazes sparked by lightning as thunderstorms swept through the area on Tuesday evening.
One of the fires broke out near Davenport Ranch, southwest of Sturgis, prompting a response from Sturgis Fire Crews and other agencies, including South Dakota Wildland Fire and the Forest Service. The Pineview Fire sent smoke into the air as crews worked to contain it. By nightfall, the fire was under control, aided by rainfall that began shortly after 9:00 p.m. The blaze, believed to have been caused by lightning, burned less than an acre.
Another small fire, also ignited by lightning, was reported just off I-90’s Exit 34. The Arrow Fire was extinguished by the time crews arrived, though two engines remained on scene to check for hot spots.
Meanwhile, Whitewood area firefighters responded to a fire along Whitewood Service Road, about two miles north of Whitewood. The fire, which affected approximately 0.18 acres along Whitewood Valley Road, was contained by Tuesday night.
