Black Hills Energy is launching the Lange II Project to enhance electricity service for customers in South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. The Wyoming Public Service Commission has granted a certificate of public convenience and necessity, clearing the way for construction to begin.
The new facility, a 99-megawatt dispatchable generation resource, will be located in Rapid City, replacing older units that have powered the region since the 1960s. Black Hills Energy Vice President Wes Ashton emphasized that Lange II is a cost-effective solution designed for reliability, ensuring power is available at all times.
The $280 million project features six reciprocating internal combustion engines capable of running on both natural gas and diesel. Construction is set to begin next month, with the new unit expected to be operational by late next year.
