Authorities have identified the victim of the June 12 shooting in Lawrence County as 59-year-old Larry Petersen from Audubon, Iowa. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office reports that Petersen was shot and killed during a fight involving four men at a rental cabin off Highway 385, south of Lead.
The group had been in the Black Hills for UTV riding, with three of the men staying at the cabin. During the altercation, one of the men fired a 9mm pistol, fatally striking Petersen. He was pronounced dead at Lead-Deadwood Hospital.
Law enforcement has not yet released the identity of the shooter, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials have stated that additional details will be made public as they become available.
