Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) has reintroduced the USA Beef Act to legally restrict the “Product of USA” label to beef that’s born, raised, and slaughtered in the U.S. The bill mirrors a USDA rule finalized in 2024, which made such labeling voluntary but enforceable starting in 2026.
Rounds wants to make the standard permanent, arguing it protects American ranchers and prevents misleading labels on imported beef. Critics warn it could spark trade disputes, as similar country-of-origin laws were struck down by the World Trade Organization in 2015.
The bill is now under Senate consideration.
