In response to recent shootings involving lawmakers in Minnesota, South Dakota legislative leaders have removed legislators’ home addresses, ZIP codes, and cities of residence from the state’s legislative website. The move, driven by safety concerns, aims to reduce the risk of personal threats against lawmakers and their families.
While city names may return to profile pages later, lawmakers can still be contacted through Capitol office phones, email, or mailing addresses. South Dakota joins several other states—including North Dakota, Maine, and Georgia—that have taken similar steps to protect elected officials’ privacy. Legislative leaders say modern communication methods offer sufficient access without disclosing personal details.
