Rapid City is one step closer to a major new sports complex thanks to a land donation announced by Mayor Jason Salamun. Pete Lien & Sons will contribute nearly 23 acres in north Rapid City—near hotels, shops, and restaurants—to be the future site of a proposed $55 million indoor sports facility.
The complex would feature basketball, volleyball, soccer, and pickleball courts and could even host large events like Division I games or the Lakota Nation Invitational. While funding is still being secured, Salamun notes potential sources include Vision Funds, hotel tax revenues, tax incentives, sponsorships, and federal tax credits.
Executive Director of the Rapid City Sports commission Domico Rodriguez added that the project is an important investment for the kids.
Pete Lien of Pete Lien and Sons expanded on that in explaining why they donated the land for the complex.
Wes Ashton, representing BH Energy added that while involvement in the project is of benefit to them, the most important aspect is the growth and prosperity of the community.
Officials see this project as a long-term investment in local youth and tourism. If all goes well, construction could begin as early as next year.
