Two additional locations have emerged as potential sites for South Dakota’s new men’s prison. The Project Prison Reset task force is now considering land in northeast Sioux Falls and Box Elder, along with earlier options in Mitchell, Worthing, and on existing state-owned property.
In Sioux Falls, Sweetman Partners is offering 140 acres near the former Wholestone Farms butcher shop. Box Elder’s site includes 105 acres of farmland off Highway 14-16, though zoning approval would be required.
The task force continues working with consultants on a proposal capped at $600 million. Governor Larry Rhoden has postponed a special legislative session to allow more time for planning. The next task force meeting is scheduled for July 8 in Sioux Falls.
