West Nile virus has been detected for the first time this season in mosquito pools from Aberdeen and Minnehaha County, prompting health officials to urge precautions as mosquito activity increases.
State Epidemiologist Dr. Joshua Clayton warns that rural living and outdoor summer activities raise the risk of exposure. Residents are advised to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, and limit time outdoors during peak mosquito hours—dusk to dawn.
