With the holiday approaching, authorities are warning about the risks of impaired driving—a deadly trend that spikes during the holiday. Between 2019 and 2023, over 2,600 traffic deaths occurred nationwide during this period, with 38% involving intoxicated drivers, primarily ages 21 to 34.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, along with state and federal safety agencies, stresses that “buzzed driving is drunk driving.” They’re urging celebrants to plan ahead: choose a designated driver, use taxis or rideshares, and intervene if friends attempt to drive after drinking.
“Even one drink can impair your ability to drive safely,” said the sheriff’s office. Celebrating responsibly, they emphasize, is everyone’s patriotic duty.
