South Dakota public schools are facing uncertainty as the Trump administration freezes $6 billion in federal education grants. These funds typically support teacher training and programs like English language instruction.
Heath Larson of the Associated School Boards of South Dakota said the move disrupts planning for the upcoming school year and may hit low-income and migrant-heavy districts hardest. Though one of five grant pools is resuming, most remain on hold as the White House reviews potential ties to what it calls a “radical left-wing agenda.”
Even if funds are restored, President Trump’s proposed budget could cut future support—complicating efforts to implement new social studies standards and ensure high-quality education for all students.
