South Dakota’s Board of Regents is expected to vote on a major policy shift that would permit faculty and students to carry concealed weapons—including pistols, stun guns, mace, and pepper spray—on public university campuses.
The proposed change follows legislation passed earlier this year that directed the regents to revise existing rules. While the law allows concealed carry, it also gives institutions the authority to restrict weapons in specific areas. Under the new policy, universities must post signs at locations where concealed weapons are prohibited and maintain an annual registry of those zones.
The policy would repeal the current ban on firearms and dangerous weapons unless authorized by campus leadership. It also requires individuals to store weapons in locked containers when not in use, with the responsibility for providing secure storage falling on the weapon owner—not the institution.
The regents are scheduled to meet this morning at South Dakota State University to discuss and potentially approve the changes.
