After weeks of delays and disputes, the recount for Rapid City Area Schools’ Area 6 Board of Education seat has concluded—with Jamie Clapham retaining her position by just two votes. Challenger Brian Johnson had initially lost by three votes and requested the recount, citing concerns over election oversight and transparency.
The recount took place at the Pennington County Auditor’s Office and confirmed Clapham’s narrow victory. Despite the controversy surrounding the process—including disagreements over who would oversee the recount and Johnson’s objections to several proposed monitors—Clapham had already been sworn in for her second term on July 1.
Representatives for Johnson say an appeal for a re-vote is likely.
