Rapid City’s Disability Awareness and Accessibility Committee is gearing up for a major celebration tomorrow, marking two significant anniversaries: the 35th year of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the 50th anniversary of the committee’s founding.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Main Street Square, featuring a Disability Resource Fair open to the public. Attendees can enjoy a free lunch, explore vendor booths, and take part in interactive activities including chalk art hosted by the Suzie Cappa Art Center and games sponsored by the Rapid City Police Activity League.
A highlight of the celebration will be a proclamation from Mayor Jason Salamun, along with a performance by Tony DeBlois, an internationally acclaimed musician who is blind and has autism.
To accommodate the festivities, a portion of Sixth Street near Main Street Square will be closed during the event. Free parking permits will be available at the committee’s booth for attendees.
The ADA, signed into law in 1990, ensures equal rights and opportunities for individuals with disabilities across public life. Rapid City’s committee continues to champion these values through education and community engagement.
