At approximately 6:00 a.m. today, the New Underwood Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a single-engine aircraft crash near the 22800 block of 159th Avenue in rural New Underwood, South Dakota.
Upon arrival, firefighters and emergency responders located two individuals aboard the wrecked aircraft. Crews quickly performed extrication and administered emergency medical aid. Tragically, one occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. The second was airlifted by Black Hills Lifeflight to Monument Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and are actively investigating the cause of the crash. For further updates, the public is encouraged to visit the NTSB Media Relations Office.
No injuries were reported among firefighters, civilians, or domestic animals.
