The Murdo volunteer firefighter who died in a crash while enroute to a grass fire has been identified. 37 year-old Nick Van Dam, was responding to a grass fire Saturday evening when the firetruck left the roadway, rolled and ejected him, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. He died at the scene. According to the South Dakota Local Assistance State Team (LAST), Van Dam had been a volunteer firefighter in Murdo for eight years and a captain for six. He had a wife and four children. He was also the parts and service manager at Murdo Car Sales. A memorial account has been set up at First National Bank in Murdo. 100% of the money will go to Van Dam’s family. Money can be sent to PO Box 528, Murdo, SD 57559. Checks must be made out to the Nick Van Dam Memorial.
A friend and sister of Van Dam’s wife, Shannon, has set up a GoFundMe page to help support her and her children. The page has already raised $11,000.
