Representative Dusty Johnson convened a behavioral health roundtable this week, bringing together South Dakota experts to address urgent challenges facing youth mental health and addiction.
Participants spotlighted troubling trends, including rising suicide rates among young adults and a statewide shortage of mental health professionals. Educators and advocates emphasized that schools remain a crucial touchpoint for early intervention—but called for expanded resources and a stronger behavioral health workforce to meet growing demand.
Experts also urged increased investment in regional services and prevention programs, particularly as substance abuse continues to impact communities across the state.
“The mission is simple,” Johnson said. “We want to make sure kids get the support they need to grow into strong, healthy adults.”
