A Friday afternoon traffic stop in Rapid City resulted in the arrest of a man on multiple drug and firearm charges. Around 4:40 p.m. on August 1, police pulled over a Chevrolet SUV near Rapp Street and North Lacrosse Street after it ran a stop sign. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers reported the smell of marijuana.
The driver, 36-year-old Leroy Hemphill, was asked to exit the vehicle. During a search, officers allegedly found a bag containing white powder that tested positive for cocaine, along with a loaded handgun. A background check revealed Hemphill had a prior felony conviction.
He was taken into custody and booked at the Pennington County Jail on charges of drug possession and possession of a firearm by a former violent offender.
