The South Dakota Commission on Gaming is urging residents to stay vigilant as online casino scams are on the rise throughout the state. These fraudulent platforms are falsely claiming affiliation with legitimate South Dakota gaming venues, posing serious risks to individuals’ financial security and personal information.
Many of the scams disguise themselves by mimicking the branding of reputable casinos, often promoting impossible bonuses and guaranteed winnings to lure players in. Authorities emphasize that under South Dakota law, offering online casino-style games is strictly prohibited.
Participating in these illegal operations can lead to identity theft and financial loss. To protect themselves, the public is advised to avoid all online gambling, be wary of advertisements touting risk-free bets, and refrain from sharing sensitive information such as banking details or Social Security numbers with unverified sites. It’s also wise to scrutinize website addresses for spelling errors, such as using “.net” instead of “.com.”
Anyone who encounters or suspects an illegal gambling site is encouraged to report it to the Commission via email at DORSDGaming@state.sd.us or by calling (605) 578-3074.
