A 31-year-old man from Eagle Butte was fatally shot by law enforcement Tuesday night following a high-risk hostage situation and vehicle pursuit that spanned multiple counties.
According to the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office, the incident began when Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement responded to a weapons-related call near the Green Grass Community. The suspect, identified as Schace Wayne Looking Horse, fled in a vehicle, initiating a pursuit that extended into Haakon County.
During the chase, Looking Horse reportedly fired multiple rounds at officers, damaging several law enforcement vehicles. After his vehicle was disabled, he allegedly took a hostage at gunpoint and stole another vehicle, continuing the pursuit.
The chase ended between Midland and Philip, where law enforcement stopped the second vehicle and fatally shot Looking Horse. The hostage sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No officers were injured.
Attorney General Marty Jackley described the event as a “dangerous hostage situation with shots fired at law enforcement officers.” The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is conducting a full investigation, including forensic analysis and interviews. Federal agencies including the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service are assisting.
This marks the sixth officer-involved shooting in South Dakota in 2025.
