Terrence Davis, a 39-year-old former state trooper and current legal services employee in Sioux Falls, has announced his intention to seek the Democratic nomination for South Dakota Secretary of State. If nominated, he would face incumbent Republican Monae Johnson in the 2026 general election.
Davis, originally from Tennessee, served with the South Dakota Highway Patrol from 2021 to 2022 and previously worked five years as a trooper in Tennessee. He now works for East River Legal Services and is pursuing a doctorate in law and public policy.
In his campaign announcement, Davis emphasized goals of transparency, accountability, and improved access to voting, particularly in rural areas. His statement included criticisms of election denial and administrative missteps, indirectly referencing Johnson’s record.
Johnson, elected in 2022, has confirmed her plans to seek reelection. Her tenure has included controversy over the release of voter registration data containing confidential information, which was later retracted following media scrutiny.
