Following a pause for the Sturgis rally, work will resume on US Highway 385. Starting Tuesday, August 12, 2025, The route will be closed to through traffic between Sheridan Lake Road and Be Still Road, near Hill City. The closure is scheduled to remain in effect until Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as part of an ongoing construction project stretching from the south end of Pactola Dam to Calumet Road. Despite the closure, the intersection at Highway 385 and Sheridan Lake Road will remain open.
Access to Recreation FacilitiesSouth Beach and South Campground will continue to be accessible via Calumet Road, which can be reached from Highway 385 by approaching from the south. The Sheridan Lake Fishing Pier and its parking area will also remain open. Visitors heading to Dakota Point or Sheridan Lake Campground should likewise approach from the south for uninterrupted access. The Pactola Visitor Center, however, will remain closed for the duration of the 2025 season. Local access to Be Still Road will be maintained, with wait times expected to be no longer than 15 minutes.
A detour route has been posted using S.D. Highway 44 and U.S. Highway 16. The South Dakota Department of Transportation advises travelers to use caution when navigating non-maintained roads in the area.
Emergency response teams have been notified of the closure and are working closely with local agencies to ensure continued coverage throughout the construction period.
