Officials report that the Buck Fire that was started by lightning late Sunday afternoon in rural Fall River County has been successfully contained. The U.S. Forest Service, which led the response, confirmed the fire scorched just under 60 acres.
The firefighting effort was a coordinated interagency response in the Black Hills, with South Dakota Wildfire (SDWF) contributing a hand crew, two engines, and aerial support. Aircraft dropped both water and retardant to help suppress the flames.
SDWF resources have now been released from the scene.
Meanwhile, lightning sparked a pair of blazes late Wednesday afternoon. The Cut-Off Fire burned 173 acres northeast of Oral and was 80 percent contained at last report. The Lucky Fire 2 miles east of Alva Wyoming burned one-tenth of an acre before being contained and controlled within a couple of hours.
