Gov. Larry Rhoden announced Wednesday that ten inmates identified as being in the U.S. illegally will be transferred from South Dakota prisons to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation. The move is part of Operation: Prairie Thunder, a state initiative focused on crime reduction and federal immigration enforcement.
The Board of Pardons and Paroles approved the parole transfers, marking a new level of cooperation between the Department of Corrections and ICE.
“South Dakota taxpayers shouldn’t bear the cost of incarcerating illegal alien criminals,” Rhoden said, praising the Parole Board’s swift action and expressing confidence in federal authorities to prevent their return.
