At approximately 10:05 p.m. Saturday night, law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting in the parking lot west of the Pennington County Fairgrounds. Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile male suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was promptly transported to the hospital for treatment.
Based on information gathered through multiple witness interviews, investigators identified another juvenile male as the shooter. He was detained early in the investigation and has since been placed within the appropriate channels of the juvenile justice system. Several other individuals have also been detained as authorities work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities recovered the handgun involved after parties connected to the shooting attempted to discard it. Preliminary findings suggest the incident stemmed from a confrontation between individuals who were acquainted with one another, and does not appear to have been a random act.
Along with the Rapid City Police, and Pennington County Sherrif’s office, the Rapid City Fire Department, Pennington County 911 Dispatch, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol assisted during the incident and investigation.
