As students return to school, law enforcement agencies across the region are stepping up efforts to ensure safe commutes—especially in school zones. Rapid City students begin classes Tuesday, and the Rapid City Police Department will deploy extra officers near schools for several weeks to monitor traffic and encourage safe driving.
Brendyn Medina, RCPD community relations specialist noted “We’ll have extra officers out… ensuring motorists are slowing down and driving safe.”
Driver Safety Tips
- Slow down to 15 mph in school zones when children are present
- Yield to pedestrians and obey crossing guards
- Never pass a stopped vehicle at a crosswalk
- Stop 15 feet from a school bus with flashing red lights
- Watch for children near driveways and intersections
- Use proper car seats and seatbelts
- Follow school-specific drop-off/pick-up procedures
