As of August 19, 2025, just under 70 of South Dakota is drought free according to the latest data from the US Drought Monitor. Drought conditions are contained to the central, south-central and southwest portions of the state with 31% reporting abnormally dry conditions. Within those areas just under 10% is considered to be suffering from moderate drought.
Historically, moderate drought (D1) has led to dry topsoil, reduced pasture quality, and stress on the cattle industry. In severe drought (D2) zones, early fire seasons, increased irrigation demand, and low water quality for agriculture are common.
