The South Dakota Highway Patrol is enhancing public safety by using advanced technology to manage dangerous vehicle pursuits more effectively. A key addition is the StarChase pursuit management system, which allows troopers to track fleeing vehicles in real time using GPS.
StarChase works by launching a small tracking device onto a suspect’s vehicle, enabling officers to monitor its location without engaging in high-speed chases reducing risk to both the public and law enforcement while ensuring suspects can still be apprehended safely.
Complementing this system is the SDHP’s long-standing use of an airplane, which provides aerial surveillance and real-time updates to ground units—further minimizing the need for risky pursuit tactics.
These technologies are now deployed across multiple patrol units statewide, reinforcing SDHP’s commitment to safer enforcement strategies. By combining innovation with proven tools, the Highway Patrol is taking proactive steps to protect communities while maintaining effective law enforcement.
