Rapid City Police were kept busy over the weekend with a string of incidents ranging from impaired driving and drug possession to vandalism and a road rage incident involving a firearm.
Last Friday morning August 22nd, around 3:10 a.m., an officer en route to an unrelated call witnessed a vehicle with its driver’s side door open traveling through the intersection of Maple Avenue and Omaha Street. The vehicle struck a curb, causing the driver to fall out and be run over by the rear wheels. The man, identified as 20-year-old Orlando Barrientos of Rapid City, showed signs of alcohol impairment and refused medical treatment. Following a DUI investigation, Barrientos was arrested for Driving Under the Influence and Underage Consumption of Alcohol, and transported to the Pennington County Jail.
Friday evening around 5:10 p.m., officers investigating an unrelated matter in the 200 block of Bald Eagle Lane spotted 30-year-old Christian Clifford, known to have an active parole detainer. Clifford fled on foot but was apprehended after a brief chase and Taser deployment. A medical evaluation was conducted as standard procedure. A search of Clifford’s backpack revealed a syringe that tested positive for methamphetamine. He was arrested for Obstruction, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and held on a Parole Detainer.
Saturday night at around 7:25 p.m., police responded to a report of an intoxicated individual at 414 E. North Street. The suspect, 24-year-old Joseph Arpan, had reportedly urinated on store merchandise before passing out in a nearby alley. The store reported over $650 in damages. Arpan was arrested for Intentional Damage to Property and booked into the Pennington County Jail.
A road rage incident Sunday morning around 11:00 a.m. resulted in the arrest of 62-year-old Kenneth Purdy. A driver reported being tailgated by Purdy’s red passenger vehicle near East Boulevard and Omaha Street. The situation escalated when Purdy allegedly brandished a handgun and pointed it at the victim. Police located Purdy and recovered the firearm. He was arrested for Aggravated Assault.
Finally, Sunday evening at around 9:30 p.m., officers responded to multiple reports of gunshots in the Cruz Drive area. A thorough search yielded no shell casings, property damage, or injuries.
