Rapid Transit System (RTS) reported a notable increase in youth ridership on the first day of the 2025–26 school year for most Rapid City students. A total of 334 youth trips were recorded—up 12% from last year’s first-day count of 295 and a 45% increase compared to 2023.
This growth reflects the continued success of Rapid City’s “Youth Ride Free” program, now entering its 10th year. Launched in the 2016–17 school year, the initiative provides free public transportation for students traveling to school, the library, work, and recreational activities. It’s especially valuable during South Dakota’s harsh winter months, offering families a safe and reliable transit option.
During the 2024–25 school year, RTS logged 56,867 youth trips—over 10,000 more than the previous year—setting a five-year high for youth ridership.
To participate, students must be registered, whether they ride occasionally or daily. Parents and guardians can sign up by calling 605-394-6631 or visiting rapidride.org and clicking the “Youth Ride Free” button. Required information includes the student’s name, school, guardian contact details, and an emergency phone number. Maps, schedules, and program details are available online under the “Youth Ride Free” tab at rapidtransitsystem.org.
