Authorities have located and arrested 30-year-old Nicholas Selig in connection with the death of his father, Vernon Selig. The arrest follows a tip from a citizen who spotted a man matching Selig’s description walking in the 1200 block of Jackson Boulevard shortly before 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Rapid City Police Department officers responded to the report and confirmed the individual to be Nicholas Selig. He was transported to meet with investigators regarding the ongoing homicide investigation, which is being led by the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office with support from the RCPD.
Selig was formally arrested and charged with First Degree Murder. He is currently being held at the Pennington County Jail.
Captain Taylor Sperle of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Investigations Division noted “We received overwhelming support from the community as all the agencies worked tirelessly through this investigation,” “This includes the media helping spread the message to the citizen who spotted Nicholas walking on the sidewalk and reported it to law enforcement. We also extend our condolences to the Selig family.”
The collaborative investigation effort included the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Pennington and Custer County Search and Rescue teams, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Pennington County State’s Attorney Office.
