Authorities have identified the victim of Wednesdays fatal shooting as 29-year-old Monte Gakin of Rapid City. The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 200 block of East Watertown Street, where officers responded to reports of gunfire inside the building.
Upon arrival, police discovered Gakin suffering from gunshot wounds inside an apartment. Despite efforts to administer emergency first aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives and agents from the Rapid City Police Department (RCPD), Pennington County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), and South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have been working to interview witnesses and pursue leads. Several individuals believed to have been present during the time of the shooting have been identified, and investigators are actively working to speak with them.
Physical evidence recovered from the scene has been collected and submitted for forensic analysis as law enforcement continues to piece together the circumstances surrounding the homicide. Based on initial findings, the incident does not appear to be random.
Law enforcement remains on scene, and the investigation is ongoing with support from multiple agencies.
