A late-night incident involving a wrong-way driver ended in a crash and multiple charges early Monday morning, according to local authorities.
At approximately 1:45 a.m., police were dispatched to Elk Vale Road following reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. Around the same time, a second call came in reporting a crash involving a similar vehicle at the intersection of E. Highway 44 and Twilight Drive.
Responding officers located an unoccupied passenger vehicle that had struck the median in the area. After investigating, police determined the vehicle belonged to 34-year-old Brent Briley, a resident of the 2400 block of S. Valley Drive, located nearby.
Briley was later found at his residence, where officers observed several signs of alcohol impairment. After further investigation, police concluded that Briley had been driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.
He was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Driving Under Revocation, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. Briley was transported to the Pennington County Jail.
Authorities have not reported any injuries related to the incident. The case remains under review.
Meanwhile, about 7:25 p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the 3600 block of Skyline Drive for a report of a single vehicle crash. On arrival, police located the vehicle which had caused significant damage to a safety guardrail in the area. Police made contact with the driver, identified as 44-yeear-old Rella Yankton of Rapid City. Police noted the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from her person, and after a subsequent DUI investigation, police determined her to be too impaired to safely operate a motor vehicle. She was placed under arrest for DUI, No Proof of Insurance, Careless Driving, and Open Container in a Motor Vehicle before being transported to the Pennington County Jail.
