At Monday’s Deadwood City Commission meeting, officials reviewed ordinances and a resolution aimed at banning sandwich boards and exterior merchandise displays along Main Street. If passed, the new rules would take effect October 6 and carry daily fines of up to $300 for violations.
Ordinance 1429 would prohibit all freestanding or portable signs on public sidewalks and rights-of-way in the historic district. Ordinance 1430 would limit exterior displays to benches, pet watering stations, flowers, and potted plants.
The proposed changes are part of an effort to preserve Deadwood’s historic charm. Resolution 2025-24 outlines a new administrative citation process, allowing department heads to issue warnings and fines without involving law enforcement. Continued violations could result in confiscation of items and liens on properties.
Some business owners voiced concerns over government overreach and called for equal enforcement of building maintenance standards. City officials said the ordinances respond to resident complaints and aim to protect Deadwood’s visual integrity.
The second reading is scheduled for September 15. If approved, enforcement begins 20 days later.
