Mayor Jason Salamun has proclaimed September 15–21 as Diaper Need Awareness Week in Rapid City, marking the ninth year of community efforts to support families in need. Volunteers of America Northern Rockies (VOA) leads the annual diaper drive, which last year collected over 20,000 diapers and $3,000 in donations—enough to provide more than 15,000 additional diapers.
📍 Collection Sites:
- City Hall (300 Sixth St)
- Fire Station 1 (10 Main St)
- Public Safety Building (300 Kansas City St)
- Rapid City Public Library (610 Quincy St)
- Mommy’s Closet (111 New York St) – year-round drop-off location
All sizes of children’s diapers are accepted, with a focus on size five. Monetary donations (check or cash) can be mailed or delivered to Mommy’s Closet at 111 New York Street, Rapid City, SD 57701.
Diaper need affects families who struggle to afford the $80–$100 monthly cost per child. Without access to clean diapers, children face health risks, and parents often miss work or school. Diapers cannot be purchased with food stamps or WIC, making community support essential.
Rapid City’s Mommy’s Closet is one of only two diaper banks in South Dakota, helping distribute supplies to low-income families year-round. For more details or to donate, visit VOA Northern Rockies.
