Rapid City Fire Department personnel took part in their annual aircraft fire training yesterday—an essential exercise required to maintain their Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) certification.
Led by ARFF Section Chief Neil Goodart, the live fire training offers firefighters a chance to hone their skills in a realistic, high-pressure environment.
This year’s training also welcomed crews from other Rapid City stations, giving them hands-on experience at the airport and insight into how they can support aircraft-specific emergencies.
The exercise simulated a full-scale aircraft fire scenario. Firefighters first tackled an external oil fire before entering the aircraft to rescue mannequins representing trapped passengers—an intense but vital drill to ensure readiness.
