Gov. Larry Rhoden has ordered flags on South Dakota government buildings and grounds to be lowered to honor the life of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.
The governor ordered flags to remain at half-staff through Sept. 14, an action in line with an order by President Trump for federal buildings.
Rhoden saying in a news release, “Charlie Kirk was a good man, a great American, and a true voice for freedom. Please join Sandy and me in praying for his family.”
He urged people to join him and the first lady in praying for Kirk’s family. All three members of South Dakota’s federal delegation offered their prayers over the situation.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune spoke about kirk’s death on the Senate floor, saying he was horrified to hear of Kirk’s death. Thune denounced political violence and offered his prayers to Kirk’s family, medical staff and attendees.
Republican U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds also commented on the situation, writing on X, “Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk, his loved ones and everyone in attendance at today’s event.”
Republican U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson said he is “”praying for Charlie Kirk and his family.” “Political violence has no place in our country,” Johnson said on X.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley wrote on his X account, “Violence is never the answer.”
Kirk was shot and killed during an appearance at Utah Valley University in Orem, just south of Salt Lake City Wednesday.
